You separated a vocal from a finished mix, but the gaps still contain a ghost of the drums, bass or chords. A normal noise gate either leaves the music behind or closes on quiet words and breaths.

That problem is stem bleed. It is recognizable musical content left in the wrong output by source separation, and it needs a different treatment from the watery or metallic residue attached to the vocal itself.

The short answer

Remove identifiable instrument bleed before cleaning separation residue. Use a content-aware leak gate or careful spectral editing for the foreign instruments, then use artifact removal for damage attached to the vocal. A conventional level gate only knows whether a frame is loud; it does not know whether that frame contains a quiet lyric or a faint snare.

A leak gate instead attempts to vary attenuation according to the detected content. It is still not magic: dense overlaps, background vocals and reverberant material can be ambiguous. Monitor quiet syllables and breaths rather than judging only a loud chorus.

Recommended processing order

  1. Edit gross errors. Remove obvious clicks, count-ins and empty regions first.
  2. Reduce the bleed. Start gently with de-leak and listen to phrase endings.
  3. Check the removed signal. If complete words become prominent, reduce the depth.
  4. Clean the residue. Put de-artifact after de-leak and start with the Vocal preset.
  5. Apply normal vocal processing. EQ, de-essing and compression come after the structural cleanup.
  6. Compare in the mix. A tiny remnant may be inaudible in context and safer than damaging the performance.

When manual editing is the better tool

For a short phrase with two obvious drum hits, clip gain or spectral repair may be faster and more transparent. Automated processing becomes more valuable on long performances, repeated revisions or batches of separated stems. The goal is not maximum reduction; it is the least intervention that makes the vocal usable.
